WHAT IS ACNE?
The formation of comedones, papules, pustules, nodules and/
or cysts. In laymans terms, this ranges from uninflamed black-
heads to pus filled pimples or large red and tender bumps.

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?
Acne occurs as a result of obstruction and inflammation of the
hair follicles and their accompanying sebaceous glands.
WHO IS MORE OFTEN AFFECTED?
Most often, it affects adolescents and young adults.
Knowing the grades of acne help in determining types of
treatment. Acne may be classified as mild, moderate or severe.
Comedones and inflammatory lesions are usually considered
separately.
What is the treatment for acne vulgaris?
Treatment for acne depends on the patient’s age and sex, the
extent and the severity of the acne, how long it has been pres-
ent, and response to previous treatments.

• Treatment for mild acne includes topical anti acne
preparations, lasers and lights
• Treatment for moderate acne adds acne antibiotics such as
tetracyclines and/or antiandrogens such as birth control pill
• Treatment for severe acne may require a course of
oral isotretinoin.
