The 80s were a decade of bright fashion, major events and stunning growth for the Sunshine State. Major
events, like the Commonwealth Games and Expo 88 highlighted the atmosphere of a city on the rise, and the
growth of the city throughout this decade saw major changes to Queensland’s image both in Australia and
across the globe.
For the Moreton Bay Region, the 80s saw the doubling of the population, reaching 205,000 people by the end
of the decade. The expansion of existing suburban centres and conversion of industrial and agricultural land
into new suburbs, started creating the communities of today.
The 80s exhibition in May 2019 will explore the dynamic relationship between the Brisbane CBD and the
Moreton Bay Region, capturing individual and community memories of this fluro be-speckled decade.
Moreton Bay Museums are asking individuals from our community to share their images, items, and stories
from the 1980s to contribute towards this exhibition. We want to see how the fashion, politics and growth
