Dear Alice
Discontent
WITH CAREER
Dear Alice,
I’ve been working in a job that I don’t like for a while now and it’s beginning to bring me down. I want to start
my own business and chase my dreams however I’m so drained after work that I never get around to it. I feel so
guilty for neglecting my own goals that I beat myself up and end up feeling even worse. I want to get out of this
vicious cycle but I feel trapped and I don’t know how to find the motivation to change things. I’ve found myself
becoming really bitter and jealous of everyone else that seems to have it all. How can I turn my life around and
become who I’ve always dreamed of?
- Matt
Hi Matt,
It’s easy to fall into a PASSIVE role in life, where life just happens around you and you end up receiving whatever gets thrown your way.
It’s easy to succumb to a ‘victim’ mind frame where bad things just nonsensically happen to you. Being passive in your journey surrenders
control to other people in your life and removes your responsibility to your destiny, dreams and goals. When you surrender your power to
others, you also accept the destiny that others choose for you. It takes work to become an ACTIVE participant of your own life, it requires
commitment, determination and consistent action. To actively chase your dreams and make good things happen requires really strong
boundaries and discipline. A fellow social worker once told me that “in order to say ‘Yes’ to what you really want, you will have to say ‘No’
to everything else that comes along the way”. This is a profound statement, however I believe that there is an additional layer atop. Not
only do you need to know what you want, you have to also believe that you deserve it. Chasing your dreams requires a certain level of
self-esteem; you need to believe in yourself. Transitioning out of a bad spot can seem impossible but there are some small things you can
do each day to turn things around. Time management is going to require strict adherence. Perhaps you can carve out an hour before work
to work on one of your own tasks. Motivation comes after action, so if your waiting to feel up to it, you may be waiting forever. Plan out
your free time and cut out any commitments that are not going to contribute to your higher self. Invest your time into the things that are
going to make you feel good in the long term. By building yourself up, you will ultimately feel more capable and able to do the not so fun
tasks that are required of you in order to start your business. Stop letting fear and anxiety control your choices and change your mantra
from “I can’t” to “I can”. You can do it!
